JumpStart.com Review and Sweepstakes CLOSED

As many of you may know, before I became a work-at-home mom I was an art and computer teacher for children in grades Kindergarten-eighth grade. During this experience I have worked with numerous art materials and educational software. One piece of software that I was always particularly fond of was the Knowledge Adventure products. I was VERY delighted when I was approached by the company to give a review and host a sweepstakes.

My children, ages 3 and 5, were excited ecstatic to be able to par-take in mommy's review. My 5 year old is a computer whiz while my 3 year old is interested, but often will need a little guidance.

The five year old's experience with JumpStart.com

"This is AWESOME, Mom! I like to walk around {the JumpStart World} and play all the games!" He thinks it's really neat when he sees other Jumpee's (JumpStart avatars) and realizes it is other children playing the game at the same exact time.

What is his favorite game? "All of them!" He exclaims. Personally, I have seen him hang out at Hops’ Jetpack (located in AdventureLand) playing math games that were geared for children 5-8! He was always really great at math and I loved seeing him challenging himself by selecting harder levels!!

"This is pretty cool. I like making my girl!” (Referring to her building her Jumpee, JumpStart.com' online avatar.) She sometime got confused navigating through the world. I was more than willing to help her through it. When I did I realized it was a great lesson to teach left, right, up and down as she moved her Jumpee around the JumpStart world with the arrow keys.

What is her favorite game? "The Rubber Ducky Game!" A matching game that reinforced letters and numbers. She loved to discover the covered picture- and I loved the valuable lesson that each picture gave (water safety, bike safety, etc.)

My thoughts? Loved it! My children were learning and were also very excited about their progress as well! You may be asking yourself "what can this computer program do that a teacher or parent cannot provide?" Being an educator and a mother, I can honestly say that educational software should be a supplement to and not a replacement of adult interaction and education. Children love to play games, why not make them educational? What about using technology as a means to teach your child? I believe that in this technologically advanced world, with so many colleges going online and many jobs requiring you to have some computer knowledge, I find that educational software, as a supplement to, posses no harm and can even make learning fun!

The JumpStart Blog is a great place to go for information about new and current games your children are playing and has many resources and suggestions for parents.

The Parents tab is full of valuable resource, such as free worksheets on math, reading, science and more! It also provides numerous learning activities for your children to enjoy.

Lovable Labels Friendship Pack Review and Giveaway CLOSED

Having three children, I can tell you first hand how important it is to have labels on everything- especially when two of three are in school (PreK and Kindergarten no less)! Before I was contacted by Lovable Labels, I have to say that I was a permanent marker type mom and would hand-write on all of their personal belongings. What happened after a while frustrated me! Eventually the "permanent" marker would fade and there I was re-writing over my first labeling attempt. Although I pride myself with my hand-writing and my knowledge of calligraphy- it is a far cry from the cuteness that I discovered with the Lovable Labels Friendship Pack that I received for this review!

What I loved? These following features: Dishwasher and Microwave Safe, Waterproof, UV Resistant, Peel & Stick {I'm the mom so I loved the more practical side of the product}. I have to say that the minute that I opened the Lovable Labels Friendship pack I instantly noticed the awesome quality. They were like "Super Labels" ready to take on anything. And I did put them through a test! I put everything in the dishwasher and would have been greatly disappointed  if these labels would not of stood up to the challenge. They did- without a problem. I also had them in the Microwave. They were golden.  I was very pleased!

What did my children think ages 3 (girl) and 5 (boy)? My little Diva loved her ballerina dancers with her pretty pink and purple names and instantly wanted to label her world. My 5 year old loves to play soccer and was ecstatic when he saw he has name labels with a soccer ball as a design. What I also loved is that the print on the names were easy for my children to read!

My Memories Digital Scrapbooking Suite Review and Giveaway CLOSED

As many of you may gather from my blog, is that I love to create. Among many of my passions is scrapbooking. Just recently I have gotten more into the digital scrapbooking genre as I find that it takes a lot less time and the photos print out just as beautifully. Can I just say that I am in love with this scrapbook software program! So let's talk about a few of My Memories Suite features:

• You can add movies and sound/music right into your digital scrapbook!
• There are many ways to share: print, jpeg image, interactive, movie, DVD, iPod, album, cards and calendar.
• What I loved best is that there are many ways to pre-design -or- if you opt to design your own.

To give you an idea of what you can do with this product in its entirety, here is a excerpt from their Web site:

Another idea that I want to do with this software is to create an interactive teaching portfolio. I am a teacher, and one handy tool that I like to have while I am job hunting is a portfolio (also comes in handy to have as an artist as well). You can link files, images of your past and present teaching experiences, as well as including video footage of you teaching and save it as a DVD to make an interactive portfolio to help in all of your job hunting needs! (Will be re-creating mine using this ASAP!)

ScanDigital Review and Giveaway- CLOSED

 

Can you believe that there was a time before digital cameras and digital camcorders? Back when we had only one copy of a photograph (maybe two if you didn't lose the photo strip)? You may be asking yourself "Why in the world do I need to know about the ScanDigital Service?" I know for myself, when my husband and I were growing up, the only way our parents were able to capture our memories was via VHS camcorders. Now, VHS being almost obsolete, it is nearly impossible to watch your childhood memories unless you have the correct player. (And who wants to rewind and fast forward anyway!) With the services provided by ScanDigital, you can now turn those old time memories into current time media.

ScanDigital is a photo scanning service that allows you to turn your old photographs, film and video into a digital format. With ScanDigital you receive a "Personal Touch. Your memories are one of a kind and deserve to last forever. We take tremendous care with each item you send us. Everything is processed manually to ensure your order receives that personal touch it deserves" (taken from their Web site).

ScanDigital had offered me a $50 gift card to try out there services. My mother in-law had a handful of VHS cassettes that she wanted to turn into DVD's. My order was received on August 10, 2011 and was completed a few weeks later on September 30, 2011. That is a pretty reasonable amount of time for the hours upon hours of home movie footage that I sent in!

I found the process to be pretty user-friendly.  There were 5 basic steps to complete the first part of the transaction:

1. What type of material am I sending- is it film, VHS, photographs?

2. Pricing Options- standard vs. My Life, Digital - Prepay & Save.

3. Digital Output- for me, being that I had VHS, I had the choice of DVD or hard drive.

4. Any Additional Products- Do I want a slide show or photo frame and memory card? I did not select any of these.

5. Shipping and Payment Information- I personally decided that I wanted to be on the extra-precautionary side and ordered a Secure Shipping Kit for an additional cost.

What I truly liked was that you could get an estimate cost of all your services with their handy pricing calculator. You do need to give them your credit card information upon signing up, so this feature put me at ease knowing that I had an estimate to as how much I would be spending.

That was it. A few days later I received my Secure Shipping Kit and my mother in-laws VHS were on their way to be turned into DVDs. A few weeks later I received my new DVDs as well as my returned VHS cassettes. I had gotten nervous not hearing from the company after my "estimated completion date" and emailed their support (not my contact) for a follow up. The woman from ScanDigital's support department did respond quickly as to why my order was taking longer than expected. I just would of thought I would of received an email to let me know it was going to take longer than expected prior to my email. Nonetheless they did a fantastic job.  My husband and I then sat down and watched these home videos and were very impressed with the quality of their work.

Turn your baby's memories into a Storybook with The Day Baby Was Born ™ - a new, FREE Web application created by Tommee Tippee.

I recently created a storybook for my youngest child and found the Web application very easy to use and was pretty self explanatory. Set up was simple- first I had to register for the storybook using my Facebook Account. After that, all I had to do is plug in the due date, name, gender (if you know it at the time) and optional additional information as to who is announcing this pregnancy and if I have any questions for my family. Adding photos is also very easy with this application! I recommend creating this storybook as soon as you find out you are pregnant- as they have a built-in pregnancy journal to help you jot down some personal notes.


I really enjoyed how this site automatically includes important news and facts on the day that your baby is born. It was very convenient that I did not have to search for all of this information! You can also tie in comments made from Facebook posts that were related to your pregnancy and birth of your child, write a letter to your new bundle of joy, create a birth announcement and then download and share your Storybook for yourself and/or to share on Facebook.

Folio Academy Review and Enter to Win a Free Art Lesson Video- CLOSED

As some of you may know, I once taught art education to prek-8th grade students way back when I started my career in teaching. Every so often I tried to include art lessons videos into my typical teaching routine. Why? Sometimes it was just nice to hear and watch a different artists perspective on the whole outlook of what I was trying to teach. I also found that students often respond openly when uses of instruction are mixed up a bit. They are great to have on hand when you are absent and your sub is not artistic.

Moving forward in this era of "eLearning" is Folio Academy. Folio Academy has online art lessons for students of all ages who are eager to learn about art. I personally witnessed the following online "classes":  Portrait Painting, How to Illustrate Children’s Books and Beginning Perspective Drawing. I was very impressed with the nature of these videos as they took you through step-by-step on how to learn the specific craft. If there were ever to be an online art degree- I would completely recommend this product to any college.

I cannot even begin to express to you the level of professionalism that I encountered with the instructors in each video. Have being to art school for my undergraduate studies, I can say with certainty that they went into more detail that I have ever experienced in a real-world studio. The lessons are taught by artists who are very knowledgeable in their field of study.

Crafty Kids 4 Kids Giveaway- Learning Shapes through Weaving

What does the Craft Kit include?

• 6 Shapes Cards (on tag board with pre-punched holes) pre-colored.
• 6 Black and White Shapes Cards (on tag-board pre-punched- to be painted in)
• Red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple yarn to complete the project

Teaching your child to weave basic, simple shapes is a great way to exercise their fine motor skills as well as teaching them concepts such as; through, over/under and in and out. The holes for weaving are large with the "Learning My Basic Shapes Through Weaving for Little Hands" Craft Kit- so there are no need for needles!


Simple Directions:
What to do:
1. If desired, use the blank cards to paint or color in. Then tape the selected color yarn to the back of the associated colored shapes card.

2. Add another piece of tape to the end of the yarn to form a tip. This makes it easier to weave the yarn in and out of the holes.

3. Help your little one weave the yarn through each hole. Tape at the end of the last hole. (If you are working with a preschool-aged child, he or she may want to weave through twice).
